The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, typically on a concrete pad at ground level, and houses the compressor and condenser coil. Inside, the air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil sits in a mechanical room, basement, or closet and is the indoor half of the system. Together these two units are what a Central AC installation puts in place.

The refrigerant line set runs between the two units, carrying refrigerant through insulated copper tubing that passes through an exterior wall. A thermostat on an interior wall is the control point, and a disconnect box near the outdoor unit gives the system a dedicated shutoff.
