The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad at the side or rear, and holds the compressor and condenser coil. The indoor air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil sits inside, most often in a basement, utility closet, or attic, and is the piece that works with the ductwork to move conditioned air through the home.

The refrigerant lines run between the two units, connecting the indoor and outdoor sides of the system. A thermostat on an interior wall gives the homeowner control over the whole setup, and a condensate drain line carries moisture away from the indoor coil.
